JIGORO KANO: The founder of JUDO. Jigoro Kano (1860-1938) was a master of JUJUTSU who founded his own school, the KODOKAN, at the age of twenty-two. In this school he taught exclusively open-handed techniques which, he stressed, were to be studied only for peaceful purposes. He called his new art JUDO to emphasize that it was a way rather than a means of combat. Jigoro Kano is the only teacher of JUDO to be called SENSEI, or teacher. (See also Judo article).
